>> EVENT DESCRIPTION
In the land where your bank balance determines whether you live there or not, where the most famous Casino in the world resides, and where James Bond visits at least once per film, is where the 2002 World Rally Championship will get underway on January 17.
The Monte celebrates its 70th Birthday this year and is the rally that all teams want to win. There are stage names that send visible shudders down the spine of the coldest most calculating driver like Sisteron and Col de Terene.
The rally is run on tarmac roads, although the drivers are faced with several road conditions in the one stage, at the start there could be dry asphalt one third the way through the road could have black ice and then, if that is not enough of a challenge, snow makes an appearance and that is all on tarmac tiers with studs in them.
This dose make for interesting times with the tier technicians at the service parks, with the weather crews in the mountains playing a vital part in team tactics.
Another factor that the Monte has over other rallies, new driver line-ups are out for the first time and all the hard work in the form of testing comes into the spotlight. Also the cars and the new technical modifications are on show, so there are a few anxious technical directors around the service parks.
This year there is only 15 stages that total 387 of competitive kilometers. Which is quite short on paper but I am sure that the drivers will not think that the finish is going come to not a minute to soon. That’s if the cars actually start leg 2 (lets hope that there is no repeat of 1999, when Richard Burns’s Subaru and all three Peugeots refused to start). |
