>> EVENT DESCRIPTION
The World Rally circus heads to Scandinavia for the first time in this year’s championship for the only true winter rally of 2002.
The rally is based in the town of Karlstad, about 200 km’s north of the capital Stockholm. The roads are fast and the drivers have a big aid getting around the corners in Sweden, the snow banks. Drivers are known to “lean” up against the banks on the outside of the corners to keep the speeds up, but there is a danger, the car could get sucked in and then a good 15 minutes might pass (eg Richard Burns and Colin McRae, 2001). The roads are very fast and very cresty (something of a trend in the Scandinavian rallies) and the average speeds for stages are sometimes in excess of 120kph, which is blusteringly quick.
The tyres are very unique as well. Very thin with a stack of spikes, is the best way to describe them, although there is the usual tread pattern variations that you would see in a gravel tyre there are also stud variations as well. Depending on whether there is snow falling, how deep the snow is and indeed if there is also gravel on the stages as well as seen in 1999 will determine how log the spikes have to be.
Engine mapping is a big part of the game too. Because the engines are running in sub zero temperatures, the engines have to be mapped in a different way to get the best out of the turbo and also to make sure the engine is running at the right temperature (pinging and detonation are a problem here)
Apart from that there are a ton of mad Swedes braving the sub-zero temps out in the forests for a glimpse of their rally heroes flashing past in a cloud of snow. Normally with a fire going and a little bit of Swedish cheer to warm the belly. |
