LOEB AND HIS XSARA READY FOR A HAPPY ENDING

Press Release Type: Leg Two WrapSébastien Loeb, Daniel Elena and their Xsara WRC are still leading the Rallye Sanremo tonight after they competed in the four stages of today’s programme including two passes through “Teglia”, the longest test of the asphalt events.
Sébastien started well
On the first run through “Teglia”, Sébastien started well and was quicker than Markko Märtin on the split times: he only conceeded 0,7s to his rival at the end of the 52,30 kms stage.
The second loop of stages comprised the same tests as yesterday. Seb’ explained his moments.
“In Cosio, I had to brake so hard before a hairpin that the wheels were close to locking. I had to handbrake to help the car turn and the engine stalled. By the time I re-started the car, we’d lost a few seconds. In the third stage of the day, I attacked from the start so I could back off slightly when driving through the six kilometres of the downhill section. Then, in the second pass through Teglia, I had a good pace but I was slowed down by some understeering problems and vibrations when braking. This will be fixed in service and for tomorrow I’m just planning to stay in the same rhythm as Markko without taking too many risks.“
I felt better and better as the day went on
Carlos Sainz was not feeling as good as he expected this morning. “Physically, I wasn’t at the top of my form”, admitted the Madrid based driver. “But I felt better and better as the day went on. The car was perfect and I increased my lead over Gilles Panizzi by two seconds. My target for tomorrow is obviously to stay in front of him.“
Colin McRae experienced a second problem-free day. The Scot would have preferred to fight as per his team-mates. Colin wisely maintained his position.
Philippe strongly holds onto the eighth position
Philippe Bugalski intended to stay in front of Tommi Mäkinen and Richard Burns, and he succeeded. The French driver encountered small problems - rear differentials after SS8 and slower changes of gears on the semi-automatic gearbox after the last stage. However Philippe strongly holds onto the eighth position and is satisfied tonight: “I have a good feeling and I’m enjoying myself. I gradually increase the pace but I still keep some security margin on purpose. I really want to be at the finish of this event…” Click here for a printable version of this news Item
