>> EVENT DESCRIPTION
This is a completely new event in the FIA World Championship. The event will run on gravel special stages, high in the hills behind the tourist town of Kemer, on the Mediterranean coast. The average altitude of stages is given as 1400 metres, while the single Service Park is at sea level. This means there will be a considerable amount of driving uphill and downhill on liaison sections! Recent bad weather has led to considerable damage to the stages, and regular and frequent rebuilding of the roads has taken place. It is possible there will be some last minute route changes. Although there is a wide variety of surfaces on the stages, the Rally is expected to be quite slow. The winning average speed in 2002 was 68kph. The Rally is run in the Asian part of Turkey, and counts as an ‘outside Europe’ by the FIA. The event is the first major achievement for Mumtaz Tahincioglu, President of TOMSFED, the Turkish Motor Sport Federation. Just under 70 cars are expected to start. This is the only round of the Junior Worl Rally Championship which takes place outside Europe. |
