From humble beginnings in 2005, Rally Ireland has been promoted to WRC opener for 2009 - replacing the traditional season opener, the Rally Monte Carlo.
Rally Ireland is primarily a Tarmac event using roads in the Sligo Mountains and the Fermanagh Lakelands. This blend of roads provides the drivers with a challenging mix of tight, twisty, narrow and bumpy surfaces, mixed in with quite a number of surface changes. This rally tends to lend itself to a more traditional gravel setup, rather than a smooth tarmac configuration. This year will also be more of a challenge due to January start. Wintery weather in Ireland is likely to give the Pirelli Winter Tyres a true workout. |
